Almost thirty years separate jaap van den Ende’s first solo museum show in 1972 at the Stedelijk Museum Schiedam from today’s exhibition of his latest paintings. While not averse to taking visual risks, he has remained remarkably consistent in those three decades. His fascination for the (underlying) systems and structures that once formed the basis of his work remains a paramount, although perhaps less obvious factor in his work. His method of incorporating several pictorial levels transformed into the confrontation of two artistic vocabularies – abstraction and figuration – and the search for reconciliation, for synthesis, of those two contradictory idioms.
