By Pipilotti Rist
The book is a reinterpretation of the homonymous work by Pipilotti Rist; a video installation. It is an artists’ book/exhibition catalogue that documents Rist’s breakthrough work which brought her to the forefront of video artists. Pipiloti Rist calls her videos ‘Moving paintings’. Her early video works maybe can be compared to images from MTV, which commenced broadcasting at around the start of her career. Rist employs alternations in speed, sound and – often very bright – colors. Shots are cut based on rhythm rather than continuity. Extreme close-ups create a dreamlike atmosphere. And pop music is always a source of inspiration and criticism. For example, in ‘I’m not the Girl Who Misses Much’ Rist repeats the opening line from a Beatles song over and over. Jumping up and down like a hysterical,
bare-breasted puppet the artist presents a parody of women depicted in rock videos. After having spun out of control completely, John Lennon’s voice delivers the original text.
